About Mount Tangkuban Perahu

Mount Tangkuban Perahu or Tangkuban Parahu is one of the most popular natural destination in West Java. This mountain is so iconic that it would be a shame to miss it. The name Tangkuban Parahu itself comes from Sundanese which means upside-down boat. This is caused by its shape which resembles an upside-down boat. The unique scenery is even incorporated within the architecture of a leading campus in Bandung, namely Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB). When Henri MacLaine Pont designed the ITB building in 1918 (De Technische Hoogeschool te Bandung or THS back then), he made sure that the buildings would not block the view of Mount Tangkuban Perahu. Up until now, we can still enjoy the beauty of Mount Tangkuban Parahu from a distance every time we walk through the Campus Center area of ITB.

Our Guests from Japan

On this occasion, our guest was a group of academics consisting of Japanese lecturers and students who were visiting ITB. After the academic trip was completed, Terantara took this group to explore the beauty of Bandung, especially Mount Tangkuban Perahu. Hiking Mount Tangkuban Perahu is expected to be refreshing and relaxing. Taman Wisata Alam (TWA) Gunung Tangkuban Parahu lies within Bandung and Subang Regency. The entry gate is at Jalan Raya Tangkuban Parahu, Sagalaherang, Subang Regency, West Java Province. This place is only about 22 km from Bandung city center and can be reached within an hour’s drive (if there is no traffic jam). To avoid getting stuck in traffic, it’s best to visit on weekdays because the road to Lembang is quite congested at weekends.

The Journey

As our guests were already staying in Bandung, we didn’t pick them up from the airport but just drove from Bandung city center to Mount Tangkuban Perahu area. It was a short, fun drive and we got there in no time. Tangkuban Perahu has nine active craters, namely Kawah Ratu, Upas, Domas, Baru, Jurig, Badak, Jurian, Siluman, and Pangguyungan Badak. However, only Kawah Ratu and Kawah Domas are open to visitors. Considering that other craters are relatively more dangerous because of the volcanic gas they emit.

Enjoying The View and Relaxing in Hot Springs

Hiking Mount Tangkuban Perahu is considered easy and can be performed even by a beginner. The hike was quick and soon we could feel thick mists covering the area, creating an otherworldly atmosphere. Visitors can also enjoy soaking their feet in hot natural pools while taking in the beautiful surrounding landscapes of Tangkuban Perahu. The cool breeze, serene ambiance, mesmerizing landscapes, and natural hot springs are a great combination for the ultimate relaxing experience.

A Little Dive into The Local Culture

Located right in the heart of West Java, most of the locals are of course Sundanese. Many loved them for their soft-spoken words and friendly behavior. They also created a famous folklore called “Sangkuriang” which tells about the origin of Mount Tangkuban Perahu. After hiking Mount Tangkuban Perahu, we visited some stalls that sell handicrafts made by people around the mountain. Most of the crafts are made of wood and bamboo.
