Kiluan Bay has many things to offer, from beautiful white sands to leaping dolphins, all will surely give you awe. The area is still relatively pristine compared to some other tourist destinations in Indonesia, providing a serene and peaceful environment for those seeking a quieter escape amidst nature. If you have been visiting Indonesia several times already and getting bored of the same place repeatedly, you might want to include Kiluan Bay on your bucket list.
Kiluan Bay Location
Kiluan Bay is located in Desa Kiluan (Kelumbayan sub-district, Tanggamus district, Lampung province). It was started to be developed as a tourist destination in 2005 by local communities. In 2019, it was announced as a water conservatory area and stated as a tourism village through SK Bupati Trenggamus.
Access to Kiluan
Travelers usually access the location by driving from Bandar Lampung, the capital city of Lampung province. It is about 70 km from Bandar Lampung. Tourists can take the route from Bandar Lampung – Teluk Betung – Piabung Angkatan Laut – Padang Cermin – Kecamatan Punduh Pidada – Desa Bawang – Teluk Kiluan. Even though the distance is only 70 km, the road is quite bumpy and therefore prolongs the ride. It can take up to 5 hours to reach the destination.
What to Do in Kiluan Bay
The main attraction of Kiluan Bay is dolphin sightings. Bottlenose dolphins and long-beaked dolphins are two species of dolphin that are usually spotted in Kiluan. It is advisable to wake up early in the morning to witness dolphins swimming and leaping in the bay’s waters. This is an opportunity to get up-close to these unique and smart creatures in their natural habitat, providing an unforgettable experience.

Apart from dolphin watching, there are also other activities such as snorkeling, swimming, and exploring nearby islands such as Pulau Kelapa. Tourists can immerse themselves in the beauty of nature, relax on the beach, and enjoy the tranquil surroundings.
The People and Its Culture
People started to inhabit Kiluan in the 1970s. At that moment, it was really a remote area with lots of wild animals such as elephants and tigers. But now, the village is inhabited by approximately 368 families. Here we can enjoy the cultural diversity of its population as it consists of various tribes such as Lampung, Balinese, Bugis, and Sunda.
Exploring Kiluan Bay with ITB Students
In this project, we took a group of ITB students to Kiluan on their semester break. We gathered up at the meeting point in Sarinah, Jakarta by Friday night around 10 P.M. Then we drove to Bandar Lampung during the night and arrived the next day by 7 A.M. We had Soto for breakfast and continued our journey to Kiluan Bay. On Sunday, we went dolphin sightseeing early in the morning after breakfast. By 8 A.M we played on the beach and went snorkeling in Pulau Kelapa.
We went back to the cottage at 12.30 P.M, had lunch, and rest. After recharging our energy, we checked out in the afternoon and reached Bandar Lampung by 8 P.M.
